The volunteer Coastguard Rescue Service provides the UK’s coastal search and rescue capability and as part of Her Majesty’s Coastguard it can operate separately or jointly with the other emergency services and volunteer rescue organisations in the UK.

The Coastguard Rescue Service consists of teams strategically located around the coast of the UK. Each team is made up of volunteers drawn from the local community and is fully trained and equipped to carry out rescue and accident prevention work along the coastline. This could involve being called out, at any time of the day or night, in all weathers, to search for missing people, to carry out cliff rescues or even helping to free people trapped in mud – indeed, anything that involves helping the coastal community and visitors to the coast who have got into difficulty. Volunteer Coastguard Rescue Officers come from all walks of life and their ages range from 18 – 65.

You will need to be reasonably fit and have a good standard of general health to be a volunteer Coastguard Rescue Officer. You could be asked to respond to emergencies at any time, so we will ask you to be available as much as possible. A small re-imbursement is made to compensate you for expenses incurred in responding to emergencies and for training.
